Virgil Anderson Obituary

Virgil Jerome Anderson of Boyd, MN, passed away at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at the age of 97.

Virgil was born on April 30, 1926, in Milan, MN to Bennie and Clara (Olson) Anderson. He was baptized into the Christian faith on July 18, 1926, at Big Bend Lutheran Church, Big Bend, MN, and confirmed May 19, 1940 at the Riverside (Grace) Lutheran Church in Dawson, MN. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Boyd. Virgil attended school in Clarkfield, MN and graduated in 1944. He entered the Navy at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois on February 26, 1945. His first stop was Pearl Harbor before he shipped out to invade Japan, then hung around the middle of the Pacific waiting for orders when he got word Japan had surrendered. He then went to Guam and waited to go back to the states where he was discharged on July 13, 1946.

Virgil Anderson and Violet Doose were united in marriage on February 1, 1948, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Boyd. Their marriage was blessed with two children: Janice and Wayne. The first years of their marriage they farmed and then in late fall of 1959, rented a service station in Boyd, and in 1974 purchased the station. Myron Nehring helped Virgil run the station for many years and was a great asset. Also in 1974, Virgil started to sell used cars and sell Pioneer seed. In 1990, Virgil sold the station, and in 1997 retired from selling used cars and Pioneer seed in 2001.

Virgil was a member and served on many committees over the years including: the American Legion, Boyd Booster Club, Boyd Good Time Days, Church Council, Church Cemetery Board, City Council, VFW Dawson, Boyd Fire Department, Civil Defense in the 1960s, and others. Virgil also enjoyed many hunting trips with numerous friends like Chuck, Don, Merle, Al, Vern, and the Rogge’s. In 1980 they bought the cabin and enjoyed many good years at the lake with the whole family. They loved the years when the grandkids would come and bring their friends to have a good time.

Virgil is survived by his daughter, Janice (Ed) Sachariason of Montevideo and son, Wayne (LaMom) Anderson of Boyd; six grandchildren: Jason (Diane) Sachariason, Scott (Jodene) Sachariason, Kristi (Aaron) Enevoldsen, and Kelly Sachariason all of Montevideo, Shawn (Molly) Anderson of Mankato, and Sheila Anderson of Minneapolis; eleven great-grandchildren: Austin of Grand Forks, Alli and Luke Sachariason, Reyna, Eva, and Cannon Sachariason, Dalton and Oliver Enevoldsen, and Scarlett Krogsrud all of Montevideo, Jada and Hannah Anderson of Mankato; brother-in-law, Gordon (Cheryl) Doose of Alexandria, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
