Wilhelm Fredrick Sommerfeld was born April 20, 1877, in Camp Release Township, Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota. His parents were Christoph and Henrietta (Krenz) Sommerfeld. He was baptized into the name of the Triune God in early infancy, and he renewed his baptismal vow in the rite of confirmation June 9, 1895, under Pastor Henry Vetter in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sparta Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota. On May 2, 1902, he entered the holy estate of matrimony with Ernstina Johanna Zahn. This union was blessed with six children. Mr. and Mrs. Sommerfeld lived in Camp Release Township until the spring of 1911 when they moved to Marietta. In 1915 they moved to Arena Township and lived there until 1918. From there they moved back to Camp Release Township for a year. In the spring of 1920 they moved to a farm eight miles southwest of Boyd. In 1941 they retired and moved to the Village of Boyd where they resided until the death of Mrs. Sommerfeld April 23, 1947. From that time on Mr. Sommerfeld made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Milburn Rogge. Mr. Sommerfeld had five sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Hulda Gottschalk, Gust, Emma (Mrs. John Rice), Emil, Laura (Mrs. Gottlieb Fenske), Ottilie (Mrs. Emil Lange) and Emilie who died in infancy. Mr. Sommerfeld died Tuesday, May 3, 1949, the result of a stroke at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Milburn Rogge, at the age of 72 years and 13 days. His departure is mourned by his six children: Christoph, Henry, Ervin, Arthur, George and Myrtle (Mrs. Milburn Rogge); one sister, Hulda Gottschalk; one brother, Gust of Rush Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada; five daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; and fifteen grandchildren.
