August 17, 1922 – November 9, 1994
Ward Bruce Gehant was born in rural Canby, Minnesota, August 17, 1922. He was one of four siblings born to George and Janette Gehant. Ward was educated in a rural country school and later attended Clarkfield Consolidated School and a welding school in Bay City, Michigan. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps August 6, 1943, and served in World War II in the second Marine Division in Saipan, Marianas Islands, June 15, 1944 through July 9, 1944. Ward also served in Okinawa. He was wounded in action June 29, 1944. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. Ward was honorably discharged as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps January 7, 1946. Ward married Barbara Lillian Youngmark March 9, 1946, and to that union were born three children: Ward Bruce, Lance Youngmark, and Dana Barbara. Ward's vocation as a Boiler Maker offered to him a variety of opportunities in the work place throughout our country. His last position was in North Carolina. Ward was a hardworking man who deeply loved his family. He was a man who loved sports of any kind, (He had been a football hero in high school). He was a man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and old cowboy movies. And Ward was a Christian! Ward Bruce Gehant died Wednesday, November 9, 1994, at Our Lady of Good Counsel in St. Paul, after a long lingering illness. He was preceded in death by his son, Lance; his parents, George and Jeanette; and his brother, Joe. Left to remember him are his wife, Barbara; his two children: Bruce (and wife, Diane of Plymouth) and Dana; one grandchild, Marsha; two sisters: Alice (and husband, Brad Gough, of Media, Pennsylvania) and Margaret Hoffman(of Bloomington, Minnesota); six nieces; eight nephews and many relatives and friends.
