Walter C. Westre was born September 22, 1912, to Lars and Cecelia Westre of Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was seventh in a family of eight. He was baptized by Rev. O. T. Storaasli and confirmed by Rev. O. M. O. Wee in the Lutheran Faith in the Clarkfield Lutheran Church being a lifelong member. He attended the Clarkfieid Public School. After graduation, he entered his lifelong occupation of farming. Walter was married to Pheme J. Thornton November 22, 1934. The two families were neighbors. Walter and Pheme attended the same rural school and graduated together from the Clarkfield High School. They made their home in Tyro township until 1943, then purchased the farm on which he resided until shortly after his retirement in the spring of 1970. Walter served on the St. Leo Fire Insurance Board for 12 years, was active on various farm boards and committees and assessor for Lisbon Township. After a lingering illness of more than a year and a half, he passed away on January 7, 1972, at the Clarkfield Hospital. Pheme preceded Walter in death on July 5, 1969. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar, Lloyd and Eugene, sister Charlotte, one brother in infancy, and both parents. Walter had an outstanding friendly personality, ready to help anyone in need. Through these months of suffering, he still was uncomplaining and with his humor, helped those around him. Leaving his passing are two sons, Earl and Cesyl; two daughters-in-law, Sonya and Darlene; four grandchildren: Peter, Ann, Michael and Jodi; mother-in-law, Mrs. Josie Thornton; two sisters: Mrs. Arden (Gladys) Jurgenson and Mrs. Elise Husby and a host of other relatives and friends.
