Walter Henry Wendland was born April 3, 1924, at Balaton, Minnesota, to parents Henry and Caroline (Loeck) Wendland. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Balaton, Minnesota. He attended Country School in Balaton. Walter was united in marriage to Verna Caroline Quist on April 30, 1949, in Luverne, Minnesota. They were the parents of two children: Ronney and Carol. Walter and Verna farmed near Balaton until they moved in 1960. He lived in Montevideo, Minnesota, and worked various jobs in the sales field. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and visiting. Walter and Verna would spend the winters in Texas and the summers at Starbuck, Minnesota. Verna passed away May 18, 1994. Walter lived in Starbuck prior to moving to the Clarkfield Care Center about one year ago. Walter passed away at the Granite Falls Municipal Hospital, Granite Falls, Minnesota, on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 15 days. He is survived by his children: Ronney (Leah) Wendland of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Carol (Jerel) Enstad of Granite Falls, Minnesota. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Rhonda (and Jon) Greenfield, Gretchen Wendland, Stephanie (Brian) Fitzgerald, Larry Wilking and Austin Enstad; and five great grandchildren: Taylor, Makenna, Logan, Madison and Gavin. Other survivors include brother Harvey Wendland and sisters-in-law Colleen Wendland and Renee Quist. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Verna; brother Lawrence; infant sister Lila; sister-in-law Eldora Wendland; and brother-in-law Gerald Quist. Blessed be his memory.
