Walter Edward Laechelt was born on a farm in Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, December 2, 1900, to August and Augusta (Neuman) Laechelt. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church of which he had been a member all his life. He was united in marriage to Julia Saltee on January 28, 1927, in Canby, Minnesota. Two children, daughter Phyllis, and son, Merlyn, were born to this union. His lifetime was spent in the occupation of farming. He was active in many community affairs and held serveral church offices. He retired from farming and moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, on December 2, 1969. Mr. Laechelt became suddenly ill March 23, 1970, was rushed to the Mayo Clinic, then to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, where he passed away Saturday morning, April 4, 1970. He attained the age of 69 years. He is survived by his wife, Julia; two children: Mrs. Phyllis Kockelman of Granite Falls, Minnesota, and Merlyn of Boyd, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; two brothers: August of Clarkfield, Minnesota, and Carl of Minneapolis; two sisters: Florence (Mrs. Leonard Zietlow) and Mrs. Mildred Wiberg of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Herman, Alfred and Edward; three sisters: Emma (Mrs. Emil Rogge), Minnie (Mrs. Erick Kassube) and Ella (Mrs. Herman Hinz).
