Virgil Murl Thompson was born July 21, 1930 on a farm near Almora, Minnesota, to Oluf and Emma (Peterson) Thompson. He was baptized at St. Lucas Lutheran Church of Cottonwood and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. In 1952 he was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps and again in 1955 he was inducted into the Army and received medical discharges. On January 28, 1956 he married Barbara Westerhouse at Onalaska Methodist Church. To this union two children, Ross and Lisa, were born. They resided near Cottonwood, where they farmed. Virgil was proud that he farmed the family farm that was homesteaded over 100 years ago. Virgil served on the school board for Cottonwood Public Schools from 1971 to 1983. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion and also a member of the Cottonwood Country Club. He served on the St. Lucas Church Board and the Cottonwood Ambulance Squad. Virgil died Tuesday, November 8, 1994, at the age of 64, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Virgil is survived by his wife Barbara, son Ross and his wife Nola, and their sons Daryn, Garret and Chase of Cottonwood; daughter Lisa, husband Don DeSmet, and their sons Jerod and Jordan of Brookings, South Dakota; sisters, Viola Neuman of Hanley Falls, Doris Stenerson, her husband Harvey of Russell; brother, Victor and his wife Christl, of Rapid City, brother-in-law Richard Garry of Edina, brother Frank and wife Adeline of Glendale, Arizona; sister Beverly Anderson and her husband Douglas of Edina; sister Ruth Ann Young and her husband Darrell of Burnsville; and sister-in-law Linda Thompson-Commerford of Danvers; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tom and sister Arline.
