Virgil Friberg was born April 22, 1926, in Tyro Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to parents Frank and Clara (Nelson) Friberg. He had one brother, Elroy. He was baptized and confirmed at Fridhem Lutheran Church. As a young boy, he fell at home which resulted in seizures for the rest of his life. Virgil graduated from Clarkfield High School. Virgil lived with his parents until their death. Virgil was a very unique person. He loved sports and never missed a local football game or basketball game. He was an avid reader of the newspapers, Outdoors Life, and sports magazines. He knew every player on every sports team. He was an avid Twins fan. It delighted him when Claire would bring her girls, Rena and Ellen, to visit him. He lived in his house in Clarkfield comfortably for many years and faithfully attended Augustana Lutheran Church every week. He fell and broke his hip, as the result of a seizure, and moved to the Clarkfield Care Center in December of 1996. He liked his life at the Care Center and decided to make it his permanent home. Virgil fell again in November of 2007 and spent three weeks in the hospital, before returning to the Care Center. He passed away at the Granite Falls Hospital on Monday, January 14, 2008, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 23 days. He is survived by his sister-in-law Leora Friberg of Clarkfield and his niece, Claire (and Bill) Hartman of St. Paul and their daughters Rena and Ellen. He is also survived by Friberg cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Elroy, in 1984.
