Virdell Stanley Oakland was born to parents Lars and Maye (Anderson) Oakland in Swede Prairie Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, on July 23, 1931. He passed away at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota, on Tuesday, December 17, 2002, at the age of 71 years, 5 months, and 17 days. He is survived by his fiance, LaVilla Saue, of Boyd, Minnesota; his sisters Vivian Knutson of Minneota Manor, Minneota, Minnesota, and Marlys (and John) Londgren of Clarkfield, Minnesota; and brother Lars (and Barb) Oakland of Hector, Minnesota. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Gladys Oakland and Phyllis Oakland, both of Clarkfield and many nieces and nephews. Virdell was preceded in death by his parents; sister Shirley; brothers Juell, Maurice, Leonard, and Merlyn; nephew Paul Oakland; sister-in-law Marlys Oakland; and brother-in-law Sidney Knutson. Virdell attended Country School District #86 for eight years. He served in the United States Army from 1952 - 1954, with part of his duty in Japan. He worked at the manufacturing plant, Parker Hannifin Corp. in Granite Falls, Minnesota, for 23 years, serving as night supervisor when he retired. Since his retirement, he has lived in Montevideo, Minnesota. He helped on farms in the Boyd area during planting and harvesting and loved to fish in his spare time. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
