Viola Knutson was born on July 6, 1914, of parents Sam and Emma Knutson at rural Canby, Minnesota, Yellow Medicine County. She attended the Barr Elementary School. She delayed her entrance to high school for four years as she helped care for her invalid mother. Vi graduated from Canby High School and took the teacher's training course to become a teacher, which had been her goal from childhood. She taught elementary school for eight years in several county schools. On April 24, 1946, she and Fredolph Friberg celebrated their marriage, an event that had been delayed four years while he served his country in World War II. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a witness for Him throughout her life. She was active in church affairs including choir, being a Sunday School teacher, superintendent and youth director. She and her husband spent most of their life farming in the Fergus Falls/Alexandria, Minnesota area. To Vi and Fredolph three children were born. One son, Mark, preceded her in death. Vi passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2003, at Ft. Collins, Colorado, at the age of 89. She leaves to mourn, her husband of 57 years; a daughter-in-law Barbara Friberg and grandchildren Justin and Stacy Friberg; a son Nathan (Margaret) Friberg and grandchildren Angela (Derek) Joesting, Michael, Daniel and Rachel Friberg; a daughter Julie (Bruce) Fitzgerald and grandchildren Karley, Kristian and Shaye Fitzgerald; her sister Emlyn (Paul) Frazuer; brother Lloyd Knutson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Vi and Fredolph spent many years of retirement in Glenwood, Minnesota. The last few years were spent with their daughter and for the last one and a half, Viola stayed in a nursing home where she was an inspiration and a witness to all.
