Thurman Kompelien was born October 18, 1911, in Normania Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to Theodore and Louise (Hanson) Kompelien. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Lucas Lutheran Church and remained a lifelong member there. He attended Rural School District #2 in Yellow Medicine County. At an early age, he became involved with farming, either helping at home or working for the neighbors. Thurman married Inez Hovdesven on April 10, 1943, at the Parsonage in Cottonwood, Minnesota. They settled on their farm in Normania and lived there for 57 years. They moved to Hill Street Place in Marshall, Minnesota, in 2000. Thurman served on the Normania Town Board, District 2 School Board, St. Lucas Church as janitor, Trustee, and Church Cemetery Board. His hobbies included bowling (he bowled on the Normania Bowling Team for 37 years), golfing, fishing, deer hunting, card playing, and visiting with his grandchildren, other family members and friends. Thurman passed away at his home in Marshall early Monday morning, April 28, 2003, at the age of 91 years, 6 months, and 10 days. He is survived by his wife; daughter Arlys (Roger) Tilberg; daughter-in-law Sharon Kompelien; son-in-law Mike Bergeland; six grandchildren: Ryan, Brent and Craig Kompelien, Lynette (Brian) Kroll, Mark (Laurene) Tilberg, and Kari Bergeland; one great granddaughter Hannah Kroll; one brother Orville; and two sisters Mildred Vanstrom and Irene Erickson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Burton and Leonard; daughter Betty Bergeland; one brother Hartford and three sisters: Alice Zietlow, Eldora Jolstad and Leona Olson.
