Thora Margaret (Morken) Halverson was born on April 23, 1910, at Cottonwood, Minnesota, to parents Thorval and Inga (Evenson) Morken. She was baptized and confirmed at Silo Lutheran Church (now Christ Lutheran in Cottonwood.) Thora graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1927 at Cottonwood High School. She attended business college in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and returned to Cottonwood as one of the early employees of North Star Companies. Thora married L.B. Halverson of rural Cottonwood on April 12, 1942. For almost 40 years, they owned and operated the Halverson Farm Store in Swede Prairie Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Following Ludwig's death on December 25, 1982, Thora moved to Cottonwood (in 1983). She lived there until December of 1996, when she moved to the Clarkfield Care Center, Clarkfield, Minnesota, where she passed away peacefully on December 26, 1999, at the age of 89 years, 8 months, and 3 days. Thora is survived by her son, James, of Bloomington, Minnesota; sisters-in-law: Genevieve Morken of Cottonwood and Irene Kolhei of Granite Manor, Granite Falls, Minnesota. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and cousins in Norway and Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sister Clara Volden and brother Olaf Morken.
