IN LOVING MEMORY OF
(Thora) Johanna
(Hanson) Brusven
July 19, 1904 – August 18, 1977
(Thora) Johanna Hanson Brusven was born to Iver and Eline (Johannson) Hanson (new comers from Norway) on July 19, 1904, at Starbuck, Minnesota. She was baptized on September 18, 1904, by H. O. Koefod, Oscar Rem Pastor. In 1905 she and her parents moved to Fort Pelly, Sackatchewan, Canada. They remained there until 1912 (she was age seven), when they moved back to Skime, Minnesota, with the rest of the family: Oskar, Vedar, Irene, and Mabel. Johanna went to school at Skime for five years. In 1917, when she was 13, they moved back to Canada, this time to Preeceville, Saskatchewan, taking with two more brothers and a sister, Haaken, Ida and Baling. One more brother was to join them there (Johnny) in 1924, before they moved again in 1925 to Archerwill, Saskatchewan. Johanna soon started working at Preeceville for Dr. Neil and his family, helping to support the family. Being quick to learn, she learned much about cooking and nursing, too, from Dr. Neil. She was soon to meet Arnold, a young farmer from Minnesota who came to Preeceville, for supplies. He would be driving a team of big grey mules. Shortly, he was to go back to Minnesota and start farming near his parents. But he returned to Preeceville and married Johanna (then age 17) at Canora, Saskatchewan, on September 2, 1921, with her parents attending. Arnold and Johanna traveled together back to Cottonwood, Minnesota, in a Ford Touring car to farm and raise four sons: Anton, Milo, Ernest and Sam; and one daughter, June. Johanna loved to cook and garden, always having the first fresh potatoes and taking pride in having spring chicken and potatoes on July 4th. She had flowers everywhere. She also loved to travel, enjoying many trips to Archerwill, Lac La ronge, Hanson Lake Road, Calgary, Nipawin in Saskatchewan. She also saw the World's Fair, Mexico, California, Norway, Niagara Falls, and other places. Arnold passed away on August 18, 1977. Johanna continued to live on the farm 73 years, 6 months and 10 days, when her health forced her to move to Brookside Manor in Montevideo, Minnesota, on July 10, 1995. On October 29, 1996, she moved again to a Nursing Home, Circle B Elder Care at the Madison Lutheran Home, Madison, Minnesota. She was a member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She passed away at the home on Monday, December 29, 2003, at the age of 99 years, 5 months, and 11 days. She is survived by her children: Anton (and Dorty) of Clarkfield, Minnesota, Milo (and Velda) of Cottonwood, Minnesota, Ernest (and Marilyn) of Cottonwood, Minnesota, Sam (and Kathleen) of Browerville, Minnesota, and June Weaver of Canby, Minnesota. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren; and sister Mabel of Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and several brothers and sisters.
