Theodore Rudolph Stenhaug, 78, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, died Thursday, May 8, 1986, at the Clarkfield Hospital. He had been hospitalized since he suffered a stroke in January. Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 12, 1986, at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church with Pastor Gordon Trelstad officiating. Active Casket Bearers were Allen Cornelius, Keith Edmunds, Alvern Johnson, Arden Lynne, Jr., Paul Ramsay and George Rysdahl. Final Resting Place is the Clarkfield Lutheran Cemetery, Clarkfield, Minnesota. He was born March 30, 1908, in Dennison, Minnesota, to Tollof and Randine (Moe) Stenhaug. He was bapitzed and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied carpentry. On June 15, 1933, he married Ingebor Otterness of Dennison. They had four children, Ted, JoAnn, Wallace and Dennis. In 1936 they moved to Spooner, Wisconsin, and opened a variety store. In 1938 they moved to Clarkfield and opened Ted's Variety Store, operating it until they sold out to Bill Haughie. He pursued his trade in carpentry for a number of years - building over 30 homes in Clarkfield and the surrounding area. In 1953 he became manager of Mork's Hardware and continued until the store was sold in 1971 to Allen Cornelius. In July of 1971 he and his wife Inky, became custodians at Valhalla Apartments in Clarkfield. They served for seven years before retiring due to Ted's failing health. He was also active in church and civic affairs and was a member of the Clarkfield Fire Department for 27 years. Ted is survived by his wife and four children, Ted, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Jo Ann of Circle Pines, Minnesota; Wally of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Denny of Casper, Wyoming; son-in-law Bill Fermenich; daughters-in-law Carol, Sandy and Mary Stenhaug. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, brothers Carl and Adolph of Dennison and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John and sister Alma. "Ted Stenhaug dies at 78" "Folks remember the 'friendly' man at Mork's Hardware" There was a time in Clarkfield when everyone asked Ted Stenhaug where they could find a certain piece of hardware in Mork's Hardware store. Afterall he ran the store for 18 years from 1953 until 1971 when it was sold to Al Cornelius and became Our Own Hardware. Thursday, May 8 Ted Stenhaug died at the Clarkfield Hospital - about five months after he entered the hospital with a stroke. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday morning and the Clarkfield community didn't forget as most of the merchants closed their doors to honor the memory of the long-time businessman. For two years Stenhaug and wife "Inky" ran a store in Spooner WI, from 1936-38 - but when they had the chance to open a store in Clarkfield in 1938 they took the opportunity and started Ted's Variety Store. Eventually, Stenhaug sold out to Bill Haugie and went to his first love, carpentry. He helped build over 30 homes in the Clarkfield area. But it was probably his work at Mork's that brought him the most noteriety. As an involved businessman Stenhaug became active with the Clarkfield Civic and Commerce Association and during "Dairy Days" he became known as "The Hamburger Maker" at the annual food booth. Stenhaug was also a member of the volunteer fire department and became its assistant chief. He also was a member of the Sportsmans Club. Stenhaug also served on the Minnesota Valley TV board. His carpenter years were in cooperation with Ole Moe. Stenhaug and his wife have four children: Ted, Carol, Wally and Dennis. All survived him. It was about 1978 that ill health struck Stenhaug. It came after he and his wife served as custodians of the Valhalla Apartments for seven years. At that time he officially retired from active work. Cornelius, who took over Mork's Hardware, remembers Stenhaug as a good friend and a hard worker. "He was around along time," Cornelius said.
