Telford Vernet
Oraas
August 21, 1906 – May 25, 1966
Telford Vernet Oraas, the son of Pioneer parents Aslak and Julia (Rikke) Oraas, was born in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, on August 21, 1906. He was baptized, confirmed and a life member of Spring Creek Lutheran Church. Rev. John Salhus officiatied at his baptism and Rev. O.T. Storaasli at his confirmation in 1921. Telford attended school in District 23 and then went on to West Central School of Agriculture. From there he entered Moorhead State in the fall of 1927 and in 1933 received his advanced rural certificate. He taught school in Lyon County in 1934 and the following year in District 36, the Swennes District. He worked with adult education work in 1940 and with the same task on a volunteer basis the following year. "T.V." as he was known by his friends, started the first 4-H Club in Normania Township and was always interested in youth and recreation work along with his politics. He served in the State Legislature for ten years. He was engaged in farming from 1941 until the late fifties when he rented his farm to neighbors. On November 6, 1962, he was united in marriage to Lois Harper of Purdy, Missouri, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Brainerd, Minnesota. She passed away two years later. Mr. Oraas' health had been failing the past several months. He submitted to major surgery before Christmas and was hospitalized much of the time since. On March 26, 1966, he was united in marriage to Corliss Stroschein at the Granite Falls Lutheran Church by Rev. T.E. Moen. He passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 1966, a the Masonic Cancer Hospital in Minneapolis, at the age of 59 years. Along with his parents and his wife, Lois, he was preceded in death by brother, Marvin, and sister, Myrtle. His sister, Grace (Mrs. Peder Bakken) and three brothers: Oral and Walter of Clarkfield and Ernest of North Hollywood, California, and two nieces, Fay Lou Boyer and Sherman Boyer of North Hollywood, California, survive him, along with his wife, Corliss.
