Kenneth Leroy
July 23, 1918 – July 2, 1990
Kenneth LeRoy Handeland, Sr. died July 2, 1990, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, 9 days in a tragic auto accident north of Danube, Minnesota. Kenneth LeRoy Handeland, Sr. son of Oley L. and Sadie J. (Richardson) Handeland, was born July 23, 1918, at home in Friendship Township. He was baptized September 8, 1918, and confirmed May 7, 1933, both at Clarkfield Lutheran Church, Clarkfield, Minnesota. Kenny graduated from Clarkfield High School in May of 1936. He started farming with his Father on the family farm and was still farming at the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Betty Lou Iverson in 1942. They have celebrated their 47th Wedding Anniversary. To this union three children were born: Barbara Gross, Byron and Kenneth Jr. Kenny loved music. He played with several bands, playing with the band "The Hollanders" for 10 years. There was always music in the house and all three children play instruments and have a love for music. He sang for many weddings and funerals. He also, loved to fly and was proud of his 1946 Taylorcraft. He loved the time he could spend flying with his son-in-law, Terry Gross. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his time at the lake. He was a life-time member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church and for many years sang in the church choir. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. He took pride in his community, through active involvement in local politics, school issues, and American Agriculture Movement. Kenny is survived by his wife, Betty Lou; daughter, Barbara and Son-in-law, Terry Gross of Timber Lake, South Dakota; son, Byron and daughter-in-law, Marcie of Clarkfield; and son, Kenneth Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jean of Clarkfield; grandchildren, Kelly, Chad, Tracie, and Richard Gross, Melissa, Gregory, and Melanie Handeland, Julia, Susan, and Bradley Handeland; one brother, Roger C. and sister-in-law, Betty of Dunedin, Florida; two sisters, Ethel Heath of Aitken, Minnesota and Dorothy Starks of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Oley and Sadie Handeland; brothers, Byron and Roger Handeland; and twin granddaughters, Mary Lynn and Bethany Lynn Gross. Kenneth had a special love for his wife, children and grandchildren. His own eulogy was "I tried."
