Obituary

Sigurd Schjelderup was born March 16, 1880, at Forsaa on the Tysfjord, Nordland, Norway. He was one of nine children born to Willatz Bing Schjelderup and Cecelia Hedvig Winther Schelderup. His childhood was spent at Forsaa where his father had a saw mill and the first flour mill in Northern Norway. He was six years old when he experienced the sudden death of his mother. He suffered another tragic loss in the death of four brothers and sisters in a scarlet fever epidemic. Several years later, his father, a brother and a sister perished in a sudden storm that overtook them as they were crossing the Tysfjord on the way to a confirmation class one Sunday morning. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Tysfjord and confirmed at Korsness in Northern Norway. He emigrated to the United States in 1898, following his sister, Anna, who had left for America in 1893. When he first came to this country, he was employed on a farm near Minot, North Dakota. He spent several years cutting timber in northern Minnesota and working in the mines on the Iron Range. He was later employed by Bunte Brothers Company and the Dayton Company, both of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He lived for a period of 17 years with his sister, Hildur, at 710 21st Ave South in Minneapolis, serving as custodian at Augsburg College and Trinity Lutheran Church, later demolished to make way for freeway construction. He was a member of Nordcap Men's Chorus for many years, the members being chosen from all Lutheran churches in Minneapolis. He contributed much time and effort to church activities at Trinity Lutheran, and the congregation in recognition of his devoted services contributed heavily to financing a trip to Norway when he retired. He was able to make a second trip back to his homeland before his health failed him. For the past six years he has resided at the Ebenezer Home in Minneapolis. During the past six years, his brother Johan has made three trips from Norway to see him and their sister, Hildur. He is survived by his sister, Hildur, of the Ebenezer Home in Minneapolis, and half sister Wilma and half brother Johan of Trondheim, Norway. He also leaves to mourn him the folloing nieces and nephews: Dr. M.I. Hauge, Waldemar Hauge and Bergliot Hauge Stueland of Clarkfield, Cecelia Hauge of Minneapolis, Dr. Erling Hauge, Scandia, Minnesota, and Dagmar Hauge Akre of Chicago, Illinois.
