Obituary

Signe Kompelien Christensen was born on March 6, 1875, in Valdres, Norway, the oldest of the twelve children of Knute and Siri (Baverstuen) Kompelien. She was baptized at Bruflat Church in Valdres, Norway. At the age of five, she came to America with her parents, an uncle and two sisters. After a year in Dane County, Wisconsin, the family came by covered wagon to Minnesota. She was confirmed in St. Lucas Lutheran Church on September 8, 1889, by Rev. Knut Thorstenson. On July 23, 1892, she was united in marriage to Christian Christensen at the St. Lucas Church and the couple settled on the farm where she resided until her death. Shortly after her marriage, she witnessed the establishment of the Spring Creek Congregation and she and her husband joined there and there she remained active and interested until her death. Her courage and faith were often inspirations to her friends and others as revealed in a letter she received on her 90th birthday from a party she had met twenty years ago. Mrs. Christensen passed away Thursday, March 11, 1965, at her farm home, at the age of 90 years. Mr. Christensen departed this life in 1934, and five of her brothers and sisters have departed, namely Berie (Mrs. Alex Christensen), Nellie (Mrs. Helge Opdahl), Theolina (Mrs. John E. Anderson), Hans and Carl Kompelien. She will be sadly missed by her three sons and two daughters: Carl of Hanley Falls, Minnesota, Albert, Bennie and Cora of Clarkfield, and Susie (Mrs. R.A. Trovatten) of St. Paul; six brothers and sisters: Oscar, Sever and John of Minneota, Minnesota, Sophie (Mrs. Hjalmer Larson) of Hanley Falls, Mabel (Mrs. Einar Gudmundson) of Canby, Minnesota, and Cora (Mrs. Peder Muhl) of Minneota, Minnesota; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
