IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Selmer Leonard
Mikelson
April 3, 1885 – May 4, 1954
Selmer L. Mikelson was born on a farm near Hazel Run, Minnesota, on April 3, 1885, the son of Peter and Tilda (Johnson) Mikelson. He was baptized at the Yellow Medicine County Church near Hanley Falls, Minnesota, and confirmed at the Hazel Run Lutheran Church. He attended a country school near Hazel Run for eight years, and later studied business methods by correspondence. He then spent several years working on the family farm. When he was about 20 years old, he started working in a Hazel Run meat market with his father. After two or three years he became manager of the Security Elevator in his hometown. On May 11, 1911, he was united in marriage with Mabel A. Jertson. To this union were born three sons: Lester, Alvine and Sylvan, and two daughers: Eunice and Sylvia. In the year 1919 he was elected manager of the Farmers Elevator at Clarkfield, Minnesota. He remained at this position until 1933. He then managed elevators for a few years at Ihlen and Taunton, Minnesota. In 1944 he became manager of the Farmers Elevator at Cannon Falls, Minnesota. He remained there until he retired from business in 1951. The next year he spent in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, following which he and Mrs. Mikelson did some traveling. They have lived at 3609 Columbus Avenue, Minneapolis, for the past year, and is where he passed away on Tuesday afternoon, May 4, 1954, at about 5:00 p.m. Music was a source of many happy hours during the life of Mr. Mikelson. For years he enjoyed singing in the choir of the Clarkfield Ev. Lutheran Church. Many beautiful leisure hours were spent listening to musical programs on record and over the radio. He loved to sing those favorite Norwegian folk songs with his friends. But perhaps his greatest musical joy was felt when he, with his family, sat by the piano in the living room singing some simple Christian hymns. He and his wonderful wife have instilled in their children an endowment of musical feeling that will live for generations. Mr. Mikelson is survived by his wife, Mabel; three sons: Lester of Minneapolis, Alvin of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Sylvan of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters: Eunice (Mrs. Robert McKibben) of Valley City, North Dakota, and Sylvia (Mrs. Keith Textor) of Ardsley, New York; sixteen grandchildren; six brothers: Martin of Galata, Montana, Emil, Charlie and Arnold of Clarkfield, Arthur of Maynard, Minnesota, Bennie of Hazel Run; and one sister, Sylvia (Mrs. A.H. Arneson) of Clarkfield. Funeral Service Friday, May 7, 1954, 2:00 p.m. Clarkfield Lutheran Church, Clarkfield, Minnesota Clergy Officiating Rev. P.L. Mork Rev.
