Ruth E. (Fjerkenstad) Hanson was born on April 21, 1923, in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, to parents John and Olga (Grefsrud) Fjerkenstad. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church of Boyd, Minnesota. Ruth married Arvin O. Hanson at Boyd, Minnesota, on April 21, 1943. They were the parents of a daughter, Darlene. The Hansons made their home in Boyd. Ruth worked a small time at the creamery prior to their marriage and following their marriage, she would go to the homes of her friends and set their hair and return later to comb it out, all for the sum of 25 cents. Arvin passed away in December of 1993 and Ruth continued to live in their home until 2000 when she moved to Burnsdale Apartments in Montevideo, Minnesota. She moved to Luther Haven in 2002 and enjoyed her last two years there very much. She was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying the Vikings and Gophers. Ruth passed away at Luther Haven on Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 27 days. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Darlene and Don Swenson, of Glenwood, Minnesota; and her grandsons Daren (and Judy) Swenson of Appleton, Minnesota, and Dana Swenson of Glenwood, Minnesota. She is also survived by her brother, Melbourne (and Clarice) Fjerkenstad of Dawson, Minnesota; sister, Arlene Hegna of Montevideo, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arvin; and six siblings: brothers Palmer, Julian, Joe and Ernest Fjerkenstad and sisters Margaret Lukken and Ruby Wiegers.
