Obituary

Ruby Jean Hanson Wharton, a Montevideo resident since 1973, passed peacefully away at the Montevideo Hospital on April 5, 1995, at the age of 91, after a short illness. Ruby Jean Hanson was born on September 17, 1903 in Lyons, Nebraska, the daughter of Alonzo Jacob Hanson and Elvina Alberta Davidson Hanson. One of eight children, she moved with her family to Granite Falls, Minnesota at the age of 11. She graduated from Granite Falls High School and went to business college in Fargo, North Dakota. She was living with her family in Litchfield, Minnesota when she met and married Alonzo Wharton, in April 1931. In February 1942, Ruby and Alonzo moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, where they owned and operated the Clarkfield Hatchery for 20 years. In 1973, Ruby and Alonzo moved to Brookside Manor in Montevideo. Alonzo passed away there on April 28, 1977. Ruby lived at Brookside where she enjoyed independent living along with the camaraderie of the other residents until she entered the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital in February 1995. Ruby is survived by her children, Gerane Wharton Park of Napa, California, and David A. Wharton of Burton, Michigan; daughter-in-law Heidi Wharton; grandchildren Heidi Rekdahl Strong and Craig Rekdahl of Napa, California; Renate Wharton Soto and her husband, Alex of Burton, Michigan, and Ursula Wharton of Lansing, Michigan; great grandchildren Chelsea Strong, Hanna Strong, and Haley Rekdahl of Napa, California; sister, Edith DeMarco of Bellevue, Washington; brother, Gordon Hanson of Sutherlin, Oregon; sisters-in-law, Betty Hanson, Lake Park, Minnesota and Verna Wharton, Aitkin, Minnesota, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her sisters, Pearl and Gladys and brothers, Ray, Howard and Chester. Ruby was a partner to her husband in business, a kind and gentle mother to her children, a faithful worker at the ice cream store in Clarkfield and later as the night watch person at Brookside, an excellent communicator to her widely scattered family, and a loyal friend.
