He was baptized and confirmed at Bernadotte Lutheran Church. Roy attended country school, District 68, and graduated from Winthrop High School on May 29, 1918. After graduating from high school Roy moved to Atwater, Minnesota, where he worked in the bank until 1920 when he moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota. Roy worked in the Clarkfield Farmers & Merchants State Bank as an Assistant Cashier until 1934 when he started his own insurance and real estate business. He also directed the 4-H Band, played at the Minnesota State Fair (where the band received the championship ribbon several times), gave violin lessons and directed a city orchestra. He was described by WCCO radio as the "Music Man" of Clarkfield. On August 19, 1922, Roy married Florence Bjorklund of St. Peter, Minnesota. During his years in business he and Florence were active in the Augustana Lutheran Church, Civic & Commerce Association and Masons. For several years Roy was responsible for organizing the parade for Clarkfield Dairy Days. Roy suffered a stroke on July 23, 1991, from which he did not recover. Roy died July 25, 1991 at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital at the age of 92 years.
