Obituary

Roland LeRoy Jurgenson was born on February 23, 1929, in Friendship Township, Yellow Medicine County, Clarkfield, Minnesota, the son of Arden G. and Gladys (Westre) Jurgenson. He grew up, and graduated from Clarkfield High School. Following graduation, he farmed with his dad until he went into the Service during the Korean Conflict. On November 20, 1954, he was united in marriage to Darlene (Anderson) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. The union was blessed with two children. They lived in Clarkfield for 48 years, until his death. Roland farmed and drove school bus until he started working for the Contel Telephone Co., where he worked for 38 years, until retirement. After retirement, he worked at the Clarkfield Care Center in maintenance, Farm Service, and the ASC Office, measuring bins. He was a lifetime member of the Legion, Dawson VFW member, Volunteer Fireman for 17 years, and on the Ambulance Crew. He also was an active member of the Lions Club, Volunteer for the Boy Scouts Canoe Trip, and gave golf lessons. Roland was a lifetime member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed golfing, baseball, football and basketball. He loved to visit with family and friends. His granddaughter, Kaia Lea Hassel was the center of his life. Roland died on Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at the Clarkfield Care Center, after a short stay in the Montevideo Hospital, at the age of 73 years, 6 months, and 25 days. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; children: Rodney Jurgenson of Clarkfield and Denice (and Brent) Hassel and granddaughter Kaia Lea Hassel of Boyd, Minnesota; mother Gladys Jurgenson of the Clarkfield Care Center; brothers and sisters: Jeanne (and LuVerne) Johnson of Kenyon, Minnesota, Arden (and Janice) Jurgenson, Jr. of Plainview, Minnesota, Richard (and Elizabeth) Jurgenson of Clarkfield, Howard (and Phyllis) Jurgenson of Clarkfield, Caron (and John) Aeikens of Sacred Heart, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Arden G. Jurgenson and brother Larry Jurgenson.
