Roland R. Bengtson was born in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, on March 12, 1921, to parents Arthur D. and Olivia (Anderson) Bengtson. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd, Minnesota, on June 18, 1978. Roland served in the United States Army from July 23, 1942, to December 1, 1945. His military specialty was Medical Technician, serving in Southern France and Central Europe. Roland received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon, American Theater Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal and Four Overseas Service Bars. Roland was united in marriage to Frances Bakke on June 30, 1946. They lived in Montevideo, Minnesota, where he worked for the Zaiser Dairy and also worked construction and janitorial duties. Roland and Frances moved to their home west of Boyd about 20 years ago and he was living there at the time of his death, on Saturday, April 7, 2001. Roland had reached the age of 80 years and 26 days. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Boyd and the Boyd American Legion, VFW of Appleton, Minnesota, and the DAV of Montevideo/Milan. Roland was a caregiver to his wife of 54 years. He would visit her almost daily at the Clarkfield Care Center and often would take her to their home for the day. He loved to visit with Greg at the Shortstop and always got lunch to eat there and one to take home. He loved his cats and took good care of them. He liked to visit with his neighbors and everyday at ten minutes to nine, would call his good neighbor Mildred. He liked to play bingo and solitaire. He was a kind man and loving husband. Roland is survived by his wife, Frances, a resident at the Clarkfield Care Center and sister-in-law Evelyn Bakke and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wally.
