Robert Vance Elkjer was born July 19, 1916, in Swift County, Minnesota, the son of Chris and Mabel (Dahl) Elkjer. He attended John Brown Academy in Arkansas, graduated from high school in Montevideo with the class of 1936, and studied aeronautics at California Flyers School of Aviation in Los Angeles, California. During World War II he served his country as a flight engineer in the U.S. Navy Air Force, in the mid-Pacific. He was employed by Braniff Airlines, Dallas, Texas, at the time of his death, at the age of 33 years. He was a member of the Clarkfield Methodist Church. Robert died December 22, 1949, in a boating drowning accident while duck hunting in Lake Dallas, near Dallas, Texas. Death came as a result of stormy weather. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Nelle (Garrison) Elkjer, whom he married at Yuma, Arizona, February 4, 1940; two children, Darlene and James; his parents; two sisters, Louise (Mrs. Lyndon Lofdahl) of Clarkfield and Marjorie (Mrs. Donald Nelson) of Montevideo; two brothers, Rev. Charles Elkjer of Kingston, Ohio, and Stanley Elkjer of Chicago, Illinois; besides many other relatives and friends.
