Rachel Kristine Fossan Nygaard, 91, died at the Clarkfield Care Center, Clarkfield, Minnesota, Tuesday, February 24, 1987. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Februrary 27, 1987, at the St. Lucas Lutheran Church of Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, with Pastor John T. Christiansen officiating. Organist was Marge Haaland. "Den Store, Hvite Flok" was sung by Pastor Christiansen. Congregational Hymns were "I Know of a Sleep In Jesus' Name" and "When Peace, Like a River". Casket Bearers were Steven Brusven, Joe Hoff, Jr., Donald Lowe, Orville Michaelson, David Michaelson, David Severson and Dale Zimmerman. Final Resting Place is the St. Lucas Cemetery, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She was born in Fossand near Stavanger, Norway, to parents Iver and Martha Fossan on August 30, 1895. She was fifth in a family of ten children - seven brothers and two sisters. She arrived in America October of 1927 and married Ingolf Nygaard on March 3, 1928. Together they did manual labor for many of their friends near Cottonwood and Clarkfield. In 1935 they moved to a farm known as the Ole Larson farm in Swede Prairie Township. They moved to Clarkfield in October, 1973. Following the death of Ingolf in 1980, she lived in her home in Clarkfield until April 1981 when she moved to Brookside Apartments, Montevideo, Minnesota. She resided there four years. On May 14, 1985, she suffered a light stroke. Following hospitalization in June 1985 she entered the Care Center in Clarkfield. She is survived by a brother, a sister-in-law and a number of nieces and nephews, all of Norway. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and six brothers.
