IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rachel (Johnson)
Berkvam
September 7, 1864 – December 4, 1951
Ragnhild Johnson Berkvam was born in Gudbrandsdahl, Norway, September 7, 1864. Her parents were Johan and Helle Gilbertson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Norway, and in 1885 came with her parents to America. For a time they made their home east of Clarkfield on the farm now occupied by the Robert Brock family. In 1919 she was united in marriage to Mr. Jens Berkvam of Clarkfield. They made their home in Clarkfield for several years, moving later to Mr. Berkvam's farm in the Spring Creek community south of Clarkfield. Here she lived until Mr. Berkvam's death on March 2, 1931. That fall she purchased a home in Clarkfield and resided there until in September, 1944, when she entered the Madison Memorial Home. Mrs. Berkvam was a Christian woman, always interested in the church and missions. Both Mr. and Mrs. Berkvam were members of the Spring Creek Church. Always a rugged, strong woman, Mrs. Berkvam's health failed the last year and on November 26th, 1951, her condition became so grave that she was moved to the Madison Hospital. Here she passed away December 4th, 1951, aged 87 years and three months. She leaves to mourn her passing one brother, Mr. Andrew L. Johnson of Granite Falls, Minnesota; a number of nieces and nephews and a step-daughter, Mrs. Oscar Olson of Starbuck, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jens Berkvam; a brother, Gilbert Johnson; and two sisters: Mrs. Charley Anderson and Mrs. Charley Brandt.
