Phyllis M. (Johnson) Gustafson (September 30, 1940 ~ November 27, 2010) Phyllis Mae (Johnson) Gustafson was born September 30, 1940, at Canby, Minnesota, to parents Albert and Millicent (Larson) Johnson. She was baptized at St. Stephans Church in Canby, Minnesota. Esther and Herman Kolbenschlag (her aunt and uncle) and Lewis Johnson and Sylvia (Thompson) Johnson (uncle and cousin) were her sponsors. She was confirmed at Garfield Lutheran Church, rural Madison, Minnesota. She graduated from Madison High School in 1958. Phyllis went on to teachers training, first attending Fergus Falls Teacher Training and graduating in 1959 and then Moorhead State College where she received a BS in 1966. (She had lots of summer school and evenings over those eight years). She taught "Country School" in Lac qui Parle county for three years starting at the age of 19. Her teaching also included keeping a wood/coal stove running with eight grades under one roof. She then taught at Granite Falls Elementary for eight years and substituted for 35 years in Marshall, Montevideo, Wood Lake, Echo, Cottonwood, Granite Falls and area schools. Phyllis and Arlan Gustafson were united in marriage on July 15, 1967. To this union three children were born: John, Michael, and Mary. She enjoyed reading, her grandchildren, coffee at the Legion Hall, checking in on who needed help and garage sales. She passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the Hennepin County Medical Center at the age of 70 years, 1 month and 27 days. She is survived by her husband, Arlan; children: John (Beth), Michael (Katie) and Mary; grandchildren: Taylor, Alexis, Hannah and Skyler; and brother and sisters: Alden, Lorna and Gail (Melvin). She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Millicent Johnson and brother Curtis. Blessed be her memory.
