IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phillip John
Bodine
August 6, 1887 – May 14, 1973
Phillip John Bodine was born in Arboga, Sweden, on August 6, 1887, where he worked in a glass factory from the age of 14 years until he was 18. He left his home there at that time on June 25, 1906, and came to America, arriving in Clarkfield, Minnesota, July 16, 1906. He worked for an uncle for two years. In 1908 he went to DeSmet, South Dakota, to work, staying there for seven years until he got his citizenship papers. He was a World War I Veteran, and spent the rest of his life in the Clarkfield area. In his later years he lived at the M.O. and Olaf Vik home, spending his time gardening and raising flowers at the Rueben Vik farm until he became ill. He loved to share his garden products as many Clarkfield people know. In June of 1963 he was taken to the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On October 5, 1963, he was transferred to the Clarkfield Care Center. In the fall of 1966 he was again admitted to the Veterans Hospital where he submitted to the amputation of his right leg. Within a short time he was back at the Care Center where he spent his retiring years. He passed away May 14, 1973, at the Clarkfield Care Center, at the age of 85 years. One younger brother, Alex Bodine of Stockholm, Sweden survives. IN MEMORY OF PHILLIP J. Bodine I was raised in Christian home in Arboga, Sweden. While a lad of 14 years, I went to work in a glass factory where I came in contact with a rough class of people and began to use liquor and tobacco. This carousing life soon made me a slave to liquor, tobacco, and gambling to the extent that no human effort could change me. But praise God, what seems impossible to man is possible with God. In 1906 I came to America and settled near Clarkfield, Minnesota. The change of environment and friends could not change my calloused heart. I still continued for thirty years to serve the same hard master as a drunkard, tobacco-fiend, and gambler. This life brought nothing but sorrow and heartache. The evening of March 15, 1936, in an intoxicated condition, I wandered into the Full Gospel Tabernacle as their service was just closing. I was in such a stupor that I did not know that I was in a place of Worship. However the next morning I remembered that one of the Saints at the Tabernacle had said, "I'm going to Pray for you." Something took place that very day. I had no desire to drink as heretofore, but I did not attend services at the Tabernacle again until April 8, 1936. That day I went to town and as usual played a game of cards with the old gang, When all of a sudden I felt an urge to attend the services at the Tabernacle. I felt uneasy during the meeting, and again the Saints said, "We will Pray for you." On May 12, 1936, "Mothers Day," I attended the Meetings again and that Evening went forward and confessed my sins to Jesus. I went home feeling lighter in my Soul. The craving for liquor, smoking and carousing is entirely gone and I feel myself a new creature in Christ Jesus. 2 Cor. 5:17. Since that time I have found my joy in serving Jesus, and He fully satisfies me. As I contact my oldfriends, they all tell me, "Keep it up, you are on the right track." I believe my mother's Prayers have followed me, altho she never lived to see them answered. It is wonderful how God has opened my blind eyes. I was so ignorant of God's word and will. Altho I carried a New Testament with me thruout the world war, I never read it. But my eyes have been opened to see wonderful truths in it. Praise the Lord! I awoke one morning recently with this song in my heart: "I'm so glad that Jesus Saved Me, Halleluja! I'm so Glad I Know it, Praise the Lord!" I surely praise God for His wonderful love to me; and my Prayers are that this Testimony may become a Blessing and a help to others.
