Pheme Josephine Thomton Westre was born June 21, 1913, to parents, Elvin and Josephine (Olson) Thomton, in Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She and her sister, Cleo, were the only children in the family. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith July 6, 1913, by Rev. O.T. Storaasli and was confirmed July 8, 1928, by Rev. O.M.O. Wee. She was a lifetime member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. She graduated from Clarkfield High School the same year as her husband, after they had attended rural school together. She went on to Montevideo Normal training and taught school in the Stony Run and Omro Township school districts. On November 24, 1934, she was married to Walter Westre. To the union two children were born, Earl, now of Willmar, and Cesyl, of Clarkfield. The family farmed in the community the last 25 years on their farm three miles northeast of Clarkfield in Lisbon Township. She was a longtime employee at the local creamery and drying plant where she served as a bookkeeper. Pheme was an active member in her church, teaching Sunday School, serving as president of ALCW group and other positions in the church and in the community. Mrs. Westre passed away Sunday afternoon, July 6, 1969, at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria as a result of a car accident on Saturday. She was driving alone in her car, when it collided with another car one mile south of Alexandria. Pastor Bagaason said at the service, "She had that twinkle in her eye along with a pleasing personality that won her many friends and she gave of her abilities freely to others. She had an unusual gift of creative ability as shown by her flower garden, needlework and ceramics as shown in her home." Pheme was preceded in death by her father, Elvin Thomton. She is survived by her husband, Walter; sons Earl and Cesyl; daughters-in-law, Sonja and Darlene; grandchildren: Peter, Ann, Michael and Jodi; her mother, Josephine Thomton and twin sister, Cleo Thomton of Minneapolis.
