Pearl Irene Mau was born on December 14, 1920, at Hazel Run, Minnesota, to Halvor and Alma (Gautefall) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Hazel Run Evangelical Lutheran Church. She attended public school through the eighth grade. On August 30, 1938, she married John Mau. Pearl lost her eyesight prior to age 30 from retinitis pigmentosa, but was able to care for her family and home. She taught herself to read and write Braille, play a chord organ and use the typewriter and taped messages for over 50 years. She enjoyed Braille books and magazines. In May of 1993, she underwent angioplasty from which she never fully recovered. Pearl lived in the Hazel Run area until moving to Riverview Apartments in Granite Falls in 1998. She was under Granite Falls Home Health Care and in 2006 she entered the Granite Manor. She is survived by her son, John (and Shirley) Mau of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and daughter Joan (and LeRoy) Winge of Montevideo; four grandchildren: Todd (and Karolyn) Winge of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kelly (and Greg) Hastings of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Kris Winge of Chicago, Illinois, and Tiffany (and Russ) Pierskalla of Rice, Minnesota; four great grandchildren: David and Christine Hastings and Bailey and Quinn Pierskalla; two sisters: Mae Weigers of Minneapolis and Doris (and Bill) Atkinson of Bountiful, Utah, and a brother, Derrald (and Shirley) Johnson of Park Rapids and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1995, four sisters and one brother.
