Obituary

Otilia Andrea Haukos was born to parents Ole and Annie Haukos on December 10, 1880, on a farm in Minneola Township, Goodhue County, near Zumbrota, Minnesota. She was baptized by Rev. C.M. Bjorn on January 1, 1891. When she was two years old, she moved with her parents to Lac qui Parle County where the family settled on a farm near Madison, Minnesota. On October 14, 1893, she was confirmed in Borgund Church. She attended Madison Lutheran Normal School and following graduation in 1900 taught in the public and parochial schools for five years. Tired of teaching school, she accepted a position as clerk in a store at Madison. Her employer later purchased the general store in Hazel Run, Minnesota, and asked her, as his clerk, to accompany him to the new location, where she served as saleslady in the "Farmers" store for three years. On July 14, 1908, she was united in marriage to Olander Berkvam of the Hazel Run area, at the Borgund Church by Rev. E. Ekeland. The two young people established their home on a farm in Hazel Run Township and there their three sons, Orville, Ardine and Lloyd were born. They became members of the Hazel Run Lutheran Church and Mrs. Berkvam was active in work there. She served as president of the ladies aid from 1924 to 1930 and as secretary of that organization from 1931 to 1936. For over 25 years she wrote the country news for the Granite Falls Tribune. In 1943, she and her husband retired from the farm and moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, and the same year, her husband passed away suddenly. During her later years, she enjoyed her trailer home in Clarkfield and the many friends and relatives who called on her. In February 1965, she entered the Madison Lutheran Home and enjoyed the companionship of her many new found friends and visits of her many relatives. She suffered a severe stroke on March 14, 1966, and passed away at the Madison Hospital on April 27, 1966. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Orville; a grandson, Irvin; a sister, Mrs. John Hagebak; two brothers, Henry and Herman Haukos. She will be greatly missed by her two sons: Ardine of Clarkfield and Lloyd of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; three daughters-in-law; three grandsons; five great grandchildren; three brothers: Olaf, Clarence and Norman of Madison; and a host of other relatives and friends.
