Obituary

Oscar Leonard Wilson was born in Columbia County, Wisconsin, on October 23, 1882, of the parents, Halvor G. and Annie (Tongen) Wilson. At the age of three, he came with his parents to Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, and settled on a farm one mile east of Hazel Run. He attended country school at a school house located one half mile east of Hazel Run, and also attended a business school in Minneapolis for a short time. In 1906 he homesteaded near Ryder, North Dakota, but returned to Hazel Run where he was united in marriage to Amanda Aarestad on December 28, 1911, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church south of town. To this union was born one son, Vernon, now of Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Oscar served as rural mail carrier at Hazel Run from 1911 to 1919, while farming on the north edge of Hazel Run, and in 1919 moved to Dawson to operate a garage. In 1923 he returned to Hazel Run to manage the Pacific elevator for six years and then purchased the hardware store which he operated until 1939. The family moved to Montevideo, Minnesota, in 1939, where he had a filling station for a number of years, and then worked at the Arneson Drug Co. until his retirement. His wife passed away in June, 1957, and he spent the next two years living with his son, Vernon, at Redwood Falls until ill health forced him to enter the Sausele rest home in Montevideo, where he died on January 8, 1960, at the age of 77 years. Oscar was a diligent worker in church and civic affairs wherever he lived and faithful in church attendance every Sunday until his health failed him. He is survived by his son, Vernon, and daughter-in-law, Marjorie, two grandsons, Terry, a University of Minnesota student, and Charles, all of Redwood Falls; two sisters: Martha of Hazel Run and Mrs. E.P. Mikelson of Clarkfield; and one brother, Lawrence of Montevideo. His wife, parents, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. IN MEMORY OF OSCAR L.
