Oscar Mauland, 93, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, died Thursday, May 7, 1987, at the Clarkfield Care Center. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 11, 1987, at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, with Pastor John T. Christiansen officiating. Music was provided by Marge Haaland, organist, and Henry Broughton and Mrs. Arlene Hawkinson, soloists. Casket Bearers were Arvid Anderson, Melvin Anderson, Wesley Anderson, Kermit Huso, Arvid Mauland and Burton Mauland. Military rites were by the American Legion Post 503, Cottonwood, Minnesota. Final Resting Place is the St Lucas Lutheran Cemetery, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. On August 4, 1893, he was born in Vallers Township, Lyon County, Minnesota, to Tollef and Bertha (Lende) Mauland. He was baptized at Silo Lutheran Church of Cottonwood on October 1, 1893, by Rev. Knut Thorstensen and confirmed May 17, 1908, at Silo by Pastor T. H. Haugen. After completing his grade school education he worked for a time at road construction and also as a threshing rig operator for Ed Ludwig. He also assisted his father on the farm. On September 4, 1918, he was inducted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged January 2, 1919. He married Marie Brenden on March 25, 1922, at the parsonage. They were married by Rev. Olterstad. They started farming, which continued to be his lifelong occupation. He was proud to be a member of the Cottonwood American Legion Post 503 for 62 years and the Farm Bureau. He served as a deacon of St. Lucas Church. Survivors include son Herbert and wife Lila; sister Elizabeth Huso of Wabasso Nursing Home; brother Bernie of Minneota Manor; grandchildren Bev Timmerman, Diane Gregoire, Judy Van Maldeghem, Mary Maki, Lois Albin, Laurie Knudsen and Arlen Mauland; and 13 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife and infant son and a son Orton, who died at the age of 24.
