IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Oscar
Appelseth
January 9, 1889 – November 1, 1968
Oscar Appelseth was born January 9, 1889, in Friendship Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, the son of Norwegian emigrants, John and Hannah (Skarsten) Appelseth. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed by Rev. O. Farseth. He grew to manhood on the Appelseth homestead. In 1917, he left for Montana where he was employed until October 4, 1917, when he was drafted into the Army of World War I. On December 15, 1917, he left for France. He belonged to Co. B, 16th Infantry, 1st Division. He saw heavy combat at Toul, Montdidier and at Soissons where he was wounded. He entered the base hospital in Nantes where he remained until November, when he rejoined his company. Later, he was with the Army in Germany, receiving his honorable discharge on Septeber 27, 1919. Oscar and his brother, Henry, formed the partnership of Appelseth Brothers Elevator Contractors and have done extensive work throughout the state and Dakotas. More recently he confined his work to elevator scale repair at which he was very adept. Rallying from a severe illness two years ago, he resumed his work to some extent. Since August, 1968, however, his health has gradually failed. He passed away peacefully on November 1, 1968, at the Veterans' Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he had been the past three or four weeks. He reached the age of 79 years. He is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Ragna Hauge and Mrs. Russell Johnson and one brother, Henry, all of Clarkfield; seven nieces and six nephews. He was a faithful member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church.
