Orville Gustin
Wallen
January 1, 1896 – May 12, 1971
Orville Gustin Wallen, son of Ole and Helen (Christenson) Vallen, was born about six miles northwest of Story County, Iowa on the 14th day of January, 1896. He was baptized by Rev. O.P. Swingen, Elim Lutheran Church, about two miles southeast of Randall, Iowa. In the spring of 1899 he moved with his parents to the area of Graettinger, Palo Alto County, Iowa, and in March, 1905, at the age of nine years, he moved with them to a farm in Friendship Township southwest of Clarkfield, Minnesota. In 1910 he was confirmed at the Israel Lutheran Church, Clarkfield, Minnesota. He was graduated from Clarkfield High School in June, 1916. He was the class salutatorian. He taught elementary rural school one six-month term in Stutsman County, north of Gackle, North Dakota in 1916- 1917. He served in the United States Navy in 1918 during World War I on convoy for troop ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean to and from France. He was graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota in June, 1922, with a B.A. Degree. He attended two or more summer sessions at the University of Minnesota. He was a high school teacher and Superintendent of Schools for four years at Amboy, Minnesota, from 1922-1926. He was Superintendent of the Sacred Heart Public School for six years from 1926 to 1932. On June 17, 1930, he was united in marriage to Mabel Rysdahl. The Rev. J.E.H. Akre of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church officiated. They purchased a farm in 1933 in Burton Township of Yellow Medicine County. They resided on this farm from then on. In 1970 he entered the Madison Lutheran Home at Madison, Minnesota. Orville Gustin Wallen passed away May 12, 1971, at the age of 75 years, at the hospital at Madison, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel, and brother, Millard Wallen. Survivors include sons: Orville A. Wallen and Merlyn Wallen. IN MEMORY OF ORVILLE G.
