Obituary

Orville Charles Hagen was born August 3, 1933, in Lac Qui Parle Township, the son of Charley and Eunice (Twyman) Hagen. He was born in a log cabin at the bottom of the big hill. Orville grew up on a farm near the Lac Qui Parle Dam. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Baxter. Orville attended school in Lac Qui Parle Village and graduated from Milan High School in 1951. He attended St. Olaf College for one year, then joined the Army serving in Japan. Later he was a Commander of the American Legion Post #59.

Orville was united in marriage with Elizabeth Oien on November 22, 1956, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd. After living in Minneapolis for a short time, they moved to a farm north of Montevideo and farmed there for over 20 years. He was a rural mail carrier for 21 years. Orville and Liz lived in Boyd and Montevideo for many years. He lived at Brookside for six years and the new VA Home since January 2024.

Orville enjoyed playing high school basketball. As an adult he played softball in the Watson Town League, danced, bowled, snowmobiled, played cards and cross-country skied. He enjoyed watching his children's and grandchildren's activities and sporting events. Orville was an avid reader. He enjoyed many types of music, especially live performances. In his later years, he toe-tapped to the music of the Mollie B Polka Party and the Lawrence Welk Show.

Orville's real passion was golf, playing almost every day until he was 84 and had several holes in one. He visited and played golf with Jim many times in San Diego. After retirement, Orville traveled often with his children visiting many places around the country—the Panama Canal, Mexico several times to escape the cold, and Europe on two river boat cruises.  He snapped hundreds of photos and still had his first 35mm camera he purchased in Japan. He enjoyed collecting and using his many cameras until his passing.

Orville is survived by his children: Lori Neeb of Minneapolis, Linda (Dan) Ringstad of Prior Lake, and Jim (Bianka) Hagen of San Diego; daughter-in-law, Rosina (Hagen) Johnson of New York Mills; grandchildren: Elizabeth Neeb (Ryan Tvenge), Melissa Neeb (Mark Acosta), Sam (Jamie) Ringstad, Kellie Ringstad (Collin Huggins), Ashley Jonas, Alisha Hagen (Joseph Alfonso); great-grandchildren: Emma and Addie Ringstad, Ezra and Felix Hagen; siblings: Lynn (Cindy) Hagen, Anita Hammersley, Nancy Streed, and extended family. Preceding him in death were his wife, Liz, and his son, Scott.

Orville died on December 21, 2024, age 91, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Montevideo. May his memory be blessed.
