Orten Alvis "Mike" Berkvam passed away on Friday, May 4, 1990, at the Clarkfield Care Center, Clarkfield, Minnesota, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 27 days. Mike was born October 8, 1907 in Hazel Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to Peter and Nettie (Hyne) Berkvam. He was baptized on November 17, 1907 at Bergen Lutheran Church of Stony Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, and confirmed at Hazel Run Lutheran Church, Hazel Run, Minnesota, in 1922. Mike grew up on a Farm north east of Hazel Run. He attended school in District 82 in Hazel Run Township. He served several years in the Army during World War II. He worked and was a business man in Hazel Run most of his adult life. He worked as a mechanic for a local garage until he had the opportunity to operate his own business. Mikes Station became a center point for the community, offering fuel, parts, service and a lot of small town sociability. Mike was always available early and late, always helpful in civic duties and just being a good neighbor. He was a charter member of Anderson-Tongen Legion Post #559, very proud to be an active long time worker in that organization. He retired to Clarkfield where he lived at the Valhalla Apartments several years and in 1989 entered the Clarkfield Care Center. Preceding Mike in death were his parents and one brother, Melvin.
