Orland Anscel Hanson was born September 6, 1912, in Normania Township in Yellow Medicine County to Ole and Emma (Brusven) Hanson. Orland was baptized and confirmed at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Normania Township, where nearby he also attended country school. On August 9, 1943, Orland and Freida Schultz were married, and together they had eight children. After farming over twenty years, they moved into the village of Boyd. Orland then worked full time as a mason and construction worker; something he continued until quite recently. Orland was well known for his hard work and his outdoor activities, including hunting, trapping, and especially fishing. As was common knowledge, if Orland wasn't catching the fish, they weren't around to be caught. And they were often to be caught! In his later years, he also enjoyed gardening, and telling tall tales to his grandchildren. The past year he enjoyed his two great grandsons. Orland died on Tuesday, December 29, 1992, in the Johnson Memorial Home, Dawson as the result of lung cancer, which was diagnosed in the spring of 1992. At his death he was 80 years, 3 months, and 23 days old. Orland is survived by his children: Patricia (husband Michael) Henne of Plymouth, Minnesota, JoAnn (husband, Butch) Kingren of Edina, Minnesota, Sharon (husband, Daryl) Derby of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Douglas (wife, Donna) Hanson of Elk River, Minnesota, Wayne (wife, Kathy) Hanson of Boyd, Minnesota, Randy (wife, Kathryn) Hanson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Daniel Hanson of Boyd, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Alvin Hanson of Montevideo, Minnesota, Evelyn (husband Tony) Septon of Montevideo, Minnesota, Amy (husband, Floyd) Christensen of Montevideo, Minnesota, Manley Hanson of Sacred Heart, Minnesota, Lloyd Hanson of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Mary (husband, Daniel) Kruse of Glenwood, Minnesota, and Arden (wife, Joan) of Clarkfield, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his wife, Freida on January 28, 1992; son Eugene; his parents; and brothers Harry and Winfred.
