IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Oley J.
Handeland
December 25, 1876 – March 3, 1920
Oley J. Handeland was born near Bergen, Norway, December 25th, 1876. His parents were Jakob and Bertha Weeks. Being the eldest of a family of twelve, he lived at the home of his grandparents until he immigrated to America, coming to Slater, Iowa, when he was fourteen years old. Mr. Handeland was united in marriage to Sadie Richardson on February 3, 1903, by Rev. Axel Sheveland near Des Moines, Iowa. For many years he served as an engineer on the railroad. After living near Des Moines for about one year, while serving on the Rock Island line, he moved to Minneapolis, where he served with the Great Northern and M. & St. L. making the run through Clarkfield. In 1910 the family moved to the farm known as the Rabe place west of Clarkfield. Here the young couple remained until 1914 when they moved to their present farm. To this union seven children were born: Byron who passed away March 3rd, 1920, Roger who lives in Chicago, Illinois, Dorothy (Mrs. Glen Starks) of Minneapolis, Ethel (Mrs. Charles F. Heath) of Mound, Minnesota, Kenneth of Clarkfield, and two sons who died in infancy. The family joined the Norwegian Lutheran congregation shortly after arriving in Clarkfield in 1911, and remained steadfast members. Mr. Handeland served many years on the parochial school board. Since his wife's passing on December 15, 1946, Mr. Handeland's health has gradually failed. He passed away at the Clarkfield Community Memorial Hospital Friday noon, April 28th, 1950. In addition to his children, he is survived by two brothers: Albert Weeks of Milltown, Wisconsin, and Oscar Weeks of Minneapolis, besides two brothers in Norway, and ten grandchildren.
