Obituary

Death came to Mr. Ole Valen, 85-year-old Clarkfield resident, on Friday afternoon, after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held at the local Norwegian Lutheran Church, Rev. P.L. Mork preaching the funeral sermon, and assisted by Rev. P.O. Wee, who had been the deceased's pastor for 23 years. Special songs were sung by Mrs. Esther Lynne, "Under His Wings", before the sermon, and "Saviour Hear Us As We Pray", after the sermon. Interment was made in the Clarkfield Church Cemetery where Mrs. Valen, who passed away a few months ago is also interred. Pallbearers at the funeral were all old friends and neighbors of the deceased: Active pallbearers: Earl Steinman, Harold Berg, Lewis Eye, Carl Rysdahl, John Emblem and Andrew Olien. Honorary pallbearers were Peter Eidem, Hans Vidness, Albert Hovdesven, Ingvald Agre, Iver Haugen, Hans H. Hanson, Henry Olson and Anton Grinager. Ole Valen, the son of Ole Sr. and Anna Valen, was born at Valen in Sunnhordland, Bergenstift, Norway, the 27th day of August, 1867. He was baptized and confirmed in a Lutheran church near his home. He left his native home and country and arrived at Gilbert, Story County, Iowa, June 7th, 1886. In 1896 he became a citizen of the United States. On the 4th day of December, 1894, he was united in marriage to Helen Anna Christensen of Randall, Iowa. Rev. O.P. Swingen officiated at the wedding. Shortly thereafter the young couple started farming in Scott Township, Hamilton County, Iowa. In 1899 they moved onto a farm near Graettinger in Palo Alto County, Iowa. Six years later, 1905, they purchased and moved onto a farm southwest from Clarkfield in Friendship. They retired from farming and moved to Dawson, Minnesota, in 1930, and came from Dawson to Clarkfield in 1943. On the fourth day of December, 1944, they observed their Golden Wedding anniversary. Rev. J.E.H. Akre and Rev. P.O. Wee were present. They became members of the Clarkfield Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1943. When they lived in Dawson they were members of the Riverside Church, and from 1905 to 1930 of the Israel Lutheran Church of Clarkfield. Ole Valen's health began to fail about two years ago. On the ninth day of July he entered the Clarkfield Community Hospital. He passed away at 4:20 p.m., Friday the 31st day of October, 1952, at the age of 85 years, two months and four days.
