Obituary

Ole Martin Gullickson was born in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, on the shore of Gullickson Lake on July 10, 1872. His parents were Halvor Gullickson and Christina (Anderson) Gullickson who had immigrated to Yellow Medicine County from Freeborn County in October 1867. He was baptized in infancy and he with his sister, Hannah, were members of the first class confirmed in the old St. Lucas Church. He worked as a farm laborer during most of his life except for a period during World War I when he was employed in shipyards in the state of Washington and in World War II when he worked in St. Paul. He was the fifth child of a family of 13 children. All of the others have preceded him in death: Iver, in infancy in 1866, Caroline in infancy in 1868, Johan Albert in 1882 at age 2, Thilda Albertina in 1889 at age 3, Carl in 1891 at age 22, Hannah (Mrs. Ole Benson) in 1907 at age 33, Alfred in 1909 at age 21, Henry in 1911 at age 29, Clara (Mrs. George Christensen) at age 55, Emma (Mrs. Otto Stenberg) in 1947 at age 69, and Olaus in 1949 at age 84. His mother passed away in 1921 at age 73 and his father in 1924 at the age of 83. Survivors are the following nieces and nephews: Olaus's four children, Herman, Henry, Mrs. Gina Thompson and Mrs. Lula Hasel, all of Minneapolis, three of Hannah's five children, Cornie Benson of Cleveland, Ohio, Stacy Benson of La Mesa, California, and Mrs. Cora Sachett of Minneapolis, three of Clara's children, Jerome Christensen of Clarkfield, Minnesota, Mrs. Isabel Anderson of Belview, Minnesota, and Mrs. Hilda Jolstad of Franklin, Minnesota, Emma's son, Norman Bradford of Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, and one of Henry's two sons, Birdeen Gullickson of Big Sandy, Montana. Alfred's son, Alfred Gullickson, may also be a survivor but his home is not known. His nephews, Bernie Benson died in 1945 at the age of 52, Kenneth Christensen in 1948 at age 45, and Clifford Gullickson in 1920 at the age of 11. A niece, Stella Benson, died in 1902 and is interred in the St. Lucas Cemetery. "Uncle Ole" had made his home in Granite Falls, Minnesota, at the Albin Olson Hotel since August 1949. He had always enjoyed excellent health until in July 1956 when he spent three weeks at the Granite Falls Hospital. He rallied and was living at the hotel again until in June of 1957 when he was again taken to the Granite Falls Hospital and later to the Renville Nursing Home. He spent the last five weeks in the hospital at Olivia. He was reinstated as a member of the St. Lucas congregation in January, 1957. Rev. Milo Lee of Renville visited with him at the hopital several times and served him the Lord's Supper a week before he passed away. He died Tuesday at the age of 85 years. We the nieces and nephews will always have pleasant memories of his ever-ready smile and warm handclasp every time we met him. His excellent memory and unusual mental alertness remained with him until the close of his life and has been of great value to all of us in our association with the family history.
