Ole Magnus Alness was born September 21, 1886, at Andolsnes, Norway, to parents Ole and Marit (Hatlan) Alness. He was baptized and confirmed in the Kors Lutheran Church in Norway. In 1903, at the age of 16 years, he came to America. He arrived at the home of an uncle, Roe Hatlen, who was farming south of Clarkfield, Minnesota. He worked as a farm hand for several years, and started farming for himself by renting from Carl J. Ahlen, later buying the farm. On December 4, 1918, he married Inga Foss, daughter of Rasmus and Jorena Foss. To this union six children were born: Jorena, Ornie, Merlin, Inghart, Alvina and Marlow. He retired from farming in 1956 and lived the remainder of his life at his home in Clarkfield until he entered the Clarkfield Care Center in January of 1978. On April 10, 1978, he suffered a massive stroke at the Clarkfield Care Center, and spent the last month at the Granite Falls Hospital, where he passed away Thursday, May 4, 1978, at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his six children, daughters: Mrs. Nuel (Jorena) Dotseth of Clarkfield and Mrs. Virgil (Alvina) Cole of Hanley Falls; and sons: Ornie and his wife, Grace Alness of Clarkfield, Ing and his wife, Mae of Granite Falls, Marlow and his wife, Shirley of Bloomington, and Merlin and his wife of Libby, Montana; 21 grandchildren; and a brother, Robert of Skein, Norway. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inga, in 1931; two sisters: Anna and Inga; two brothers: Mores and Sorun: and a grandson, Michael Alness.
