Norton Claire Engelstad, son of Robert and Mathilda (Huso) Engelstad, was born April 14, 1917, at Aneta, North Dakota, in Nelson County. He was baptized June 17, 1917, by Rev. O.J. Ovrebo and confirmed April 26, 1931, by Rev. A.O. Odegaard, both events taking place at the Sundahl Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Aneta High School graduating class of 1936, the St. Olaf College class of 1940, and the Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, class of May, 1944. On May 28, 1944, he was ordained into the holy ministry. He served parishes at Calumet, Michigan, Columbus, North Dakota, and Bristol, South Dakota, before accepting the St. Lucas and Israel Parish, where he was installed on June 1, 1962. On June 28, 1944, he was united in marriage to Ruth Rygg of Moorhead, Minnesota, by Rev. Roy Harrisville. This anniversary and the silver anniversary of his ordination were observed this past June. Three children were born to this union: Stephen, Ruth Ann and Miriam. He passed away on Thursday evening, November 6, 1969, at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar where he was a patient following a second heart attack, at the age of 52 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Engelstad. Surviving him are his wife, Ruth; one son, Stephen, a senior at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota; two daughters: Ruth Ann, a nursing student at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Miriam, a senior at Clarkfield High School; his mother, Mathilda Engelstad of Aneta, North Dakota; a brother, Robert of Bismarck, North Dakota; and two sisters, June (Mrs. Alvin Grundahl) of West Bend, Wisconsin, and Marion (Mrs. Franklin Rice) of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
