Nels E. Nelson was born September 7, 1885, to Engebret and Oline (Nelson) Nelson in Lisbon Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was baptized December 24, 1885, in Bergen Lutheran Church. On June 7, 1897, he joined Clarkfield Lutheran Church and was confirmed by Rev. O.C. Farseth on May 27, 1900. He was united in marriage to Gertie Hanson on October 24, 1920. They were blessed with four children. Nels spent his entire life on the farm, the same place which was originally homesteaded by his parents. Until recent years, he was active in church affairs and served on the school board for over 20 years. On February 17, 1970, he was admitted to the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital and there he passed away on Saturday, April 18, 1970, at the age of 84 years. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Severt and Ole; his sister, Betsy; and grandson, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Gertie; three sons: Harold of Clarkfield, Orville of Minneapolis, Robert of Clarkfield; one daughter, Carol (Mrs. Richard McMahon) of Minneapolis; two daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
