Nels Olai Halvorson was born in Norway on September 1, 1883, the son of Halvor and Herborg (Halversdatter) Okland. He was baptized on September 23, 1883, and confirmed October 10, 1897, in Austevolds church. He came to America in 1898 and made his home in Clarkfield where he lived until his death on October 7, 1955. He was occupied as a miller with the Clarkfield Roller Mills as long as the firm was in operation. After that he operated a feed mill until he retired in 1947. On September 19, 1906, he was united in marriage to Petra Korneliusen. To this union four children were born, one girl having died in infancy. Mrs. Halvorson passed away in February of 1918. On November 8, 1919, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Emma Droen and to this union two children were born. He suffered a stroke while visiting at the home of his son in Virginia, Minnesota, on August 14, 1955, from which he never recovered and passed away at the Clarkfield Community Hospital on October 7, 1955, at the age of 72 years, one month and seven days. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, seven children:: Hilmar, Pearl (Mrs. Merald Nelson), Thelma (Mrs. Anton Sabe) of Clarkfield, Gerhard of Alexandria, Minnesota, Erling of Virginia, Minnesota, Maurice Droen of Hanska, Minnesota, and Alvin Droen of Crookston, Minnesota; four brothers: Mons of Clarkfield, Hans of Montevideo, Minnesota, and two brothers and three sisters in Norway; 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild. His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Nels was a very patient and kind husband and father, loving a simple and quiet life. He always greeted every one with a smile. He will be sorely missed by his many relatives and friends. Blessed be his memory!
