Obituary

Nalum Mardigo Lerstad, son of Halvor and Anna (Olson) Lerstad, was born August 2, 1907, at Cottonwood, Minnesota. In infancy he was baptized into the Christian faith at the Silo (now Christ) Lutheran Church. Here he faithfully attended church and Sunday School, was confirmed on June 25, 1922, and was a lifelong member. He attended the Cottonwood Public Schools. After graduating from high school he worked together with his father and brothers on the farm and did masonry work. In 1943 he was called into the service of his country, serving until the war ended. Upon his return from military service he attended the Dunwoody Institute at Minneapolis, Minnesota, after which he was employed by the Bjerke Electric Company at Marshall, Minnesota, as an electrician for ten years. On June 29, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ardell Ree, daughter of Torjus and Cora Ree, at the Christ Lutheran Parsonage by the Rev. H.J. Madland. They made their home in Cottonwood for several years. He then returned to the occupation of farming. For the past year Nalum has been in failing health and on November 3, 1970, he submitted to an operation for a brain tumor at the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For a short time his health improved, but on February 9, 1971, he returned to the Veterans Hospital for a second operation from which he did not recover. On June 5, 1971, he passed away at the Weiner Memorial Nursing Home at Marshall, Minnesota, at the age of 63 years. Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters and one brother. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; one sister, Agnes Lerstad of Fairmont, Minnesota; two brothers: Oliver of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Arne of Santa Susana, California; three nieces: Mrs. Donald Johnson (Beatrice Engh) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Mrs. Richard Miles (Caroline Engh) of Burlingame, California, and Mrs. Roger Hill (Judith Lerstad) of Burnsville, Minnesota; besides other relatives.
