Obituary

Minnie Geneva Johnson was born March 30, 1915, in Stony Run Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to parents Thomas and Bertina (Eide) Benson. She was born the sixth out of 12 children. She was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church. She attended School District #4 for the first through eighth grade and then attended Granite Falls High School, graduating in 1936. Minnie married Eugene McGregor Johnson in 1946. Minnie lived on the farm three miles SE of Boyd, Minnesota. She made this a comfortable home for her two sons, Robert and Lowell, as well as two brothers, Thoralf and Oliver Benson. Minnie's parents also lived on this farm having taken care of them for many years. She worked at the Clarkfield Care Center for several years. Minnie was an active member of Bergen Lutheran Church her entire life. She taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, was involved with the church library, as well as WELCA for many years. She also belonged to the Boyd Homemakers Club as well as volunteering at the Montevideo Public Library. She enjoyed her flowers on her farm as well as knitting and making many quilts. She moved to Montevideo in 1989 with her brother, Oliver. They did much traveling together including Hawaii and Norway. They traveled in all but three states. Oliver passed away in July of 2009. In 2005, Minnie and Oliver sold their home and moved to Brookside Manor. Minnie became a resident of Luther Haven in January of 2006. Minnie passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at Luther Haven, at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 17 days. She is survived by her two sons: Robert (and Jeannie) of Finlayson, Minnesota, and Lowell (and Mary) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Kim (and Matt) Jarvi, Heather Johnson, Stephanie (and Steve) Nunn, Ryan (and Angie) Johnson and her great grandchildren: Danielle and Sam Jarvi, Elizabeth and Timothy Nunn. She is also survived by a step granddaughter, Amy (and Justin) Westin and children Cheyanne and Jenna and step great grandchildren: Josh and Brittany Nunn. Also surviving are her siblings: Ruth Laemmle, Linda (and Hilman) Korstad and Thoralf (and Myrtle) Benson and many nieces and nephews. Minnie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Bertina Benson, brothers: Theodore (in infancy), Harold, Eldor, Oliver and sisters: Esther Dahlgren, Ellen Weigt, Corella Rasmussen, Thelma Berg and niece Marjo Ross.
