Obituary

Mildred Ida (Olson) Haaland was born March 2, 1910 in Dunn County, North Dakota, to Gulleck and Maia Fenn Isakson. The family lived in a sod house until 1915 when her father built a home. Mildred attended Richton District # 28 and Killdeer High School. In 1928, her mother died of cancer, and Mildred had to quit school and take care of her siblings, several brothers and one sister. In 1932, following the death of her father, she moved to Cottonwood to live with the Amodts, cousins of her father. Mildred and Gustav Haaland were married on June 24, 1934, in Milbank, South Dakota. They made their home with Gustav's mother, as he helped at home. In 1939, a daughter, Beverly May was born. Later on, the couple moved to the Jens Berkvam place. Mildred lived on her farm near Clarkfield until her health started to fail. She moved to Boyd to be near Helen and Bruce Leasman and also spent some time at the Clarkfield Care Center. Mildred passed away at the Clarkfield Care Center on Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the age of 89 years, 2 months, and 28 days. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly, a resident of REM Home in Canby, Minnesota; sister, Nora Ross of Warren, Oregon; brothers: George Olson of Killdeer, North Dakota, and Martin Olson of Tekoa, Washington. She is also survived by sister-in-laws: Helen May Leasman, Annie Christensen, Minnie Christensen, Viola Haaland, and Mabel Brandt, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, five brothers, and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Mildred provided loving care and attention to Beverly for 35 years. Beverly has caring and loving 'housemothers' at REM and she considers that her home. Mildred enjoyed quilting, coffee with family and friends and reading. She was very active and faithful to Spring Creek Church. She was a member of Nordfjordlaget, the Clarkfield Care Center Auxiliary and Friendship Bible Study. She will be missed by many.
