Obituary

Mildred (Elmer) Jurgenson was born on November 11, 1914, to Edward P. and Clara Jaenisch Elmer on the farm home near Sham Lake, Cottonwood, Minnesota, where her parents spent their entire 59 years of married life, including their wedding supper. She was the seventh of eight children, and was preceded in death by Edna, Dorothy, Gladys, Clarence, and Alfred. She was baptized at Cottonwood Lutheran Church, but due to the language barrier, her family became members of the Presbyterian church in the same community. Mildred was graduated from Cottonwood High School with the class of 1932 and the Calhoun Business College, Minneapolis, where she completed a banking and accounting course along with secretarial. She was employed as bookkeeper at Swifts in Marshall and worked evenings at an insurance office. She was asked to work at the court house in Granite Falls where she accepted a position with the Federal Government in setting up the farm programs. She moved with that position to Clarkfield when the County Headquarters was transferred there. In spite of the depression, she never applied for a job. On June 21, 1936, she was united in marriage with Erling B. Jurgenson, then a partner in the publishing of THE CLARKFIELD ADVOCATE since 1924. In 1939, Erling and Millie took over the newspaper-publishing and job printing business, and, in 1947, they built the present Advocate "radiant-heat" building (second of such in the state) and carried on the work and resided on second floor. Erling served the community half a century and Millie was in the professional field for over forty years. In 1973, they retired due to Erling's poor health. Two children were born to this union: the Rev. Dr. Stanley D. Jurgenson, Chief Chaplain at the V.A. Medical Center in Danville, Illinois; and the Rev. Dr. Kay L. Jurgenson, Associate Pastor at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. In 1940 she joined the Augustana Lutheran Church in Clarkfield where she served in many capacities for fifteen years - as a Sunday School teacher, member of the church board, treasurer of the congregation, president of the women's organization as well as other areas. After the deaths of her husband in 1976 and her companion-brother, Alfred, in 1979, Millie moved to Minneapolis to reside with her daughter, Kay. She became a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis where as a volunteer, she served many years cooking and baking for those in need. Since 1987, she has been a member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church where her daughter is an Associate Pastor. Millie was an active person in community affairs, served in the Civic and Commerce since her first assignment in 1935, served on the Housing and Redevelopment Board (HUD), worked in the beginning of Clarkfield's first nursing home and many other activities through her volunteer work in the community and through her newspaper work. She also helped organize the One-Fund Board. Millie resigned from several of these positions when she moved to the cities on a full-time basis in 1980. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of which she was a member for over fifty years. She held various offices in the county and state and served the county as Bi- Centennial Chairwoman under State Chairman, Rudy Perpich. She was Maurset Lag Historian for forty years and recorded the family history of over 600 members. She also took pictures and published the stories of over 500 area families. Millie departed her earthly life on Saturday, March 12 at 5:15 a.m. at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital. Her interment will be at the Clarkfield City Cemetery next to her husband, Erling. Left to remember her are her two children, four grandchildren, Michael, Erica, Kristen, and Arminda Jurgenson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one brother, Irvin Elmer, and sister, Ella Harrington, both of Denver, Colorado; and many many relatives and friends. God's sustaining grace to each and every one of you until that grand and glorious Resurrection morning!!
